Pinata Party!

Recreate it!

Pinata Party! These Hot Air Balloon pinata are way too cool to break! Have some extras to save for room decorations.

Cover your table with oilcloth in white with black dots. We added a runner of our gift wrap in Reversible Dot and Checks in Black and White.

Hot air "balloons" are actually paper mache! Using a regular balloon as a form, we covered the balloons using 3 layers of 1 1/2" wide strips of packing paper and paste (2 c water, 1/2 c flour, 1 tab sugar). Dry between layers for maximum strength. Do not cover tied end of balloons. Once dry, we popped the balloons and trimmed the open edges of paper mache about 3" wide. Then using 2 inch wide strips of tissue (4 sheets total), we shredded one edge and glued (with glue stick) the un-cut edges around and around the balloon, for a fringed effect.
The polka dot hot air balloon was made using polka dot tissue strips that are approx 2 inch and tapered thinner on the skinny ends. (Like a long "cats eye" shape).

For the baskets we used 8 oz. hot/cold soup containers. Using an awl, poke holes approx. 1 inch part along the top and poke holes along the bottom that are between the hole spaces above. To create a zig zag along the side of the hot/cold container. Weave black wax twine through the holes to create a basket effect. Again with the wax twine string three points to attach to the pinata.

Poke another hole in the bottom of the basket and string with wax twine. Thread an 18" through center of the floor of the basket of the hot/cold container using an awl and secure with clipiola paper clip. Thread 3 striped flags, we put "up, up and away!" for our message using the printing template on our website here. Or create mini flags with washi tape.

Fill pinata with treats and seal opening with matching gift wrap or paper circle 3 1/2" wide.

Three different themes tie this look together. Our #1 theme: Black and White

Put your eatible goodies into Deli Totes in Domino Dots decorate with grosgrain with black border and create pleated rosettes with gift wrap using the reversible dot/check in black and white or stack Hot/Cold Containers and tie together using black and white bakers twine. Make paper boats with sandwich sheets in black check using this template (adapted from Martha Stewart). Download template here.

Use striped treat bags and print a message by running into your regular printer (with message upside down) and feed the closed side into printer first. To create triangle pouch, close by bringing sides together, trim any excess and fold lip down and seal with ribbon. Note: Some printers handle their printing differently, it's recommended you test yours.

Our ##2 theme: Yellow and Black

Stack three sizes of bio pack boxes in white and tie together with a 1 1/2" striped grosgrain ribbon and a flag used here as a tag.

Stack black take out boxes, tied with grosgrain with yellow border and attach with a key tag (we printed on 2" circle labels which fit inside the key tags perfectly).
Use polka dot treat bags in yellow and black. Refer to theme #1 on treat bag closure. Add yellow napkins and plates to complete this theme.

Our &335;3 theme: Lime and Black

Take a White Shopping Bag in Toucan Size (5 1/4" x 3 1/2" x 8 1/4") and put a band of gift wrap in Reversible Dot/Checks in Black and White. Print the number 3 or your personal message onto a 2" circle label. Tuck Lime green polka dotted tissue and a paper fan, for those hot summer days.

For snacks, stack two sizes of take out boxes and tie together with grosgrain with lime border or take a 8x8x3" gift box, decorate with a sheet of checked sandwich tissue and tie off with black and white bakers twine and tuck a couple of green striped paper straws. Another idea is to tuck away treats into a lime striped treat bag which was printed with a special message (Refer to instructions in theme #1 above for how to print onto treat bags), closed off with the sides together.
Add matching napkins and plates.
